Day 1

The time has come! Yesterday, after a few unforeseen circumstances with the car hire, we set off to the Isle of Skye with our nine-seater car loaded to the brim. The expedition was officially underway!

Our first stop, Asda, where we stocked up on food for breakfasts and lunches. With a week of camping on Skye ahead of us, we had to be prepared. We also bought ourselves lunch for the car journey and our resident Cypriot, Mike, tried a Scotch egg for the first time. In his words, it was “pretty darn tooting good”.

The drive from Glasgow to Skye went pretty well. We left the gorgeous sunshine of Glasgow behind, quickly entering nothing but rain. Mike thought he saw James Bond as we were in what looked like Skyfall country, but it was only an Aston Martin driving past. You never know though. The landscapes we drove though were gorgeous! We spent a little time identifying geographical landforms and those of us on the right side of the car said their saw two stags (but we only have their word for it).

In Fort William, we stopped for petrol and Haribo’s and we tried to spot the top of Ben Nevis but the mist had rolled in. We missed a turning because we were singing Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, but other than that it was smooth sailing. Big shout out to Lewis for driving us all the way! As we caught our first glimpse of the Skye bridge, the sun peaked through the clouds and the rain stopped.

Our next mission was to set up camp. Unfortunately, the sunshine we saw from the mainland did not last and the rain began to set in just as we were finished putting up the tents. The rain did not deter the midges. They loved us, but we were not so keen on them. The first pair to cook dinner were Lois and Kerensa, and they whipped up a lovely spicy tomato pasta (also known as penne arrabbiata) with broccoli while fighting the wind, the rain, AND the midges. They're real heroes. This took a considerable amount of time, but the team remained positive and ate some of the brownies, that Kerensa and Jennifer made before the trip.

As we ate dinner and congregated in the larger tent to escape the rain, Lois ran us through the plans for the next day, and the week. Mike and Dylan washed up and we retired to our respective tents (one being considerably larger than the other) and tried to get warm. This was easier for some than it was for others.

So, here we go! The expedition is officially underway! We will be keeping you up to date through regular blogs, and posts on our social media platforms so keep your eyes peeled for those. We do not have the most reliable Wi-Fi at the moment so we can’t promise regular updates, but we shall try our best!

Best wishes from Skye,

The Seaweed Team
