As you may know, we have an amazing logo this year which is splashed all over our social media platforms and soon to be on our team t-shirts. But you might not know the lengthy process behind its development. Check out some of the initial designs below...
Our first thought, when planning our expedition, was that we needed a new logo. Something fun and different to really motivate us to plan our trip to Phuket, and more importantly, something we can print on our t-shirts!
Initially, as part of our local outreach, we wanted to host a logo competition with the primary school students we were going to visit in and around Glasgow. However, with schools shut and COVID-19 restrictions in place, this was not possible.
Luckily, our team is very creative and all of our initial designs were drawn and thought up by our very own Jennifer Sibbald!
At first, of course, we were going to Thailand to undertake dive focused research projects, so our ideas for a Thailand logo were snorkel-mask based - featuring the beautiful coral reefs we were planning to study. These initial designs, drawn up by Jennifer, were then digitalised by Haroun Al-Shaater (his Instagram and website are linked at the bottom). Now we have changed our research location, we have had to alter our logo. However, we intend to keep the final Thailand design under our hats for a 'big reveal' next year, when we can hopefully make it to Phuket. Below are some of the initial sketches and one of the early graphic designs.

Once we cemented our plans to go to Scotland, we had to adjust our logo accordingly. Once again, Jennifer drew up the initial designs and we decided the continuous line versions caught our fancy the best. It perfectly demonstrates the interconnected nature between the land and the sea.
Some of Jennifer's early sketches are included below. As you can see in the coloured designs, we wanted to highlight our new research focus but also draw back to our connections to Thailand.

With some more help from Haroun Al-Shaater, our new logo was born (below). If you look closely you might be able to see a Thai flag on the kayak besides that of Scotland.
"It has been such fun creating the designs for our logos! I have always enjoyed doodling silly little pictures, so it was really cool to have them made into amazing graphics by the very talented Haroun. I was extra lucky in that I got the opportunity to design not one, but two logos and it has been great seeing the Scotland design circulating on our social medias - and soon to be on our expedition t-shirts!" - Jennifer
We adore our new logo and think it really encapsulates not only our love for the Scottish landscape but also the fact that there is wildlife on our door step. We can't wait to get out to the coast and start investigating Scottish seaweed farms!
Stay tuned,
